Managing Anxiety with Worry Watchdog (and Cool Cat!)
The Managing Anxiety with Worry Watchdog (and Cool Cat!) Show is a core component of the Think and Be Me programme, aimed at helping children recognise, understand, and manage feelings of anxiety and worry. It features Worry Watchdog, a character representing children's fears and anxieties, and Cool Cat, who helps guide Worry Watchdog—and the children—through strategies for managing worries.
The Managing Anxiety with Worry Watchdog (and Cool Cat!) Show gives children a framework to understand and manage their anxiety in a creative, supportive, and empowering way.
It teaches key emotional regulation skills that are essential for navigating worries both in school and in life.
Key Themes and Objectives:
UNDERSTANDING ANXIETY
The show begins by normalising feelings of worry and anxiety.
Worry Watchdog displays common fears that children may relate to, such as “What if I don’t know the answer?” or “What if something bad happens?”
These scenarios help children identify their own worries.
EXPLAINING THE BRAIN'S RESPONSE
The show incorporates simple explanations of the brain's fight, flight, or freeze response, emphasizing how the brain sometimes senses danger even when there isn’t any.
Worry Watchdog shows how this can make us feel tense, nervous, or afraid without needing to be.
COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY (CBT) CONCEPTS
Children learn about managing their anxious thoughts through the CBT approach, focusing on:
- Noticing and naming feelings: Worry Watchdog demonstrates how to notice anxious thoughts and name them, making it easier to manage them.
- Calming the body and brain: Cool Cat teaches Worry Watchdog techniques to calm down when feeling anxious, including breathing exercises, using the five senses technique, and taking breaks.
CATCH, CHECK AND CHANGE THOUGHTS
A central part of the show is learning how to catch anxious thoughts (often called 'stinking thinking'), check if they are true, kind, and helpful, and then change them to more positive and realistic thoughts.
For example, Worry Watchdog might think, "I can’t do this," and Cool Cat helps him reframe it to, "I can try my best."
