Video Lesson 1

1: INTRODUCTION

In this video, Cat shares the story about May May, her Worried Watchdog, and Dexter her Cool Cat who isn’t scared of anything.

Children will learn about their own Worry Watchdog thinking, and how to change it to Cool Cat thinking.

On completion of Module 1, children will have an understanding of how their thoughts affect how they feel. They will realise that they are in charge of their thoughts by using Cool Cat thinking.

2: HEALTHY CHOICES

In this video Cat shares the story about how she didn’t like brushing her teeth when she was younger, but that we need to make daily choices to have healthy bodies and healthy thinking.

Choosing to think and be brave is, like brushing teeth, a good habit we form every day.

Video Lesson 3

3: WHOOPEE CUSHION
In this video Cat shares the story about how her daughter was scared of a whoopee cushion, then that grew to being scared of balloons and rubber bands.

Children will see that sometimes we can be scared of one thing, which then grows to being scared of lots of things

When we avoid things, they get worse. So, instead, we need to think and be brave, and slowly we won't be scared anymore.

Video Lesson 4

4: JUNK MAIL

In this video Cat talks about how your brain is like a letter box - we all get junk mail and real mail. She likens this to getting unhelpful and helpful thoughts in your brain. 

When we focus on thinking more helpful positive thoughts, then the worried and negative thoughts - the junk mail- becomes a lot less important.

5: CRYSTAL BALL

In this video Cat talks about how sometimes it feels like our brain has a crystal ball inside it, telling us what will happen in the future. We might feel like it is saying things like “you are going to fail” or even “no one will like you”. Cat helps children recognise and get in control of their thoughts by using this popular analogy.

6: GLOOMY GLASSES

In this video Cat recalls when her son lost his soccer game. He wanted to give up, and never play again. This is because he looked at the situation with his gloomy glasses on. 

When we look at a situation through our gloomy glasses, we see everything 'bad' in a situation. When we look at things with our sunny glasses on, we think positively, and are even able to consider how we can do better next time.

7:FALSE ALARM

In this video Cat shares the story about when her smoke alarm went off. She thought it was a fire and panicked, but it was just burnt toast. 

This analogy shows that sometimes our worries are really a false alarm and there isn’t actually anything to be afraid of.

She also introduces the tactic of practicing our ABCs to calm down big feelings.

How To Use These Videos

Background

If you have made it to this page, you are probably a parent or caregiver of a child who is struggling to manage their big feelings.

These courses help children understand why they feel the way they do, and what they can do to manage their emotions.  They will discover a variety of coping skills, so they can feel confident knowing when and how to use each one.

Many of the skills I teach in these courses come from a type of therapy called CBT which helps people learn that their feelings don’t just happen to them all of a sudden, they are determined by their thoughts.

If you can change your thoughts or actions, you can change your feelings also.  This is an awesome discovery to make earlier in life because it can help kids better manage stress as they grow up.  

Top Tips For Using These Courses

TOP TIPS FOR USING THINK AND BE COURSES AT HOME

Start by watching the videos yourself first, and reading the parent’s guides to familiarise yourself with the content.  Apart from the first introductory video, most can be played in any order.

For example, if your child is afraid of going to a school camp, you could skip ahead to the Fear Ladder module, and develop a strategy to overcome their fear using the ladder method.

Children learn best when they feel safe, connected, and relaxed.  For some that means snuggled next to you on the couch, others prefer to be doing something like colouring or playing with lego while they listen.

Each child has their own way that they like to take in information.  Maybe they like to binge watch the whole lot or space them apart by a few days.

Maybe they want to watch the same one over and over if it brings them comfort.  The best outcomes come when it is an enjoyable learning experience for them.

View yourself as a coach coming alongside them to encourage and support them, rather than telling them what to do.  Reflect rather than instruct, getting them to do the thinking.  Using phrases like “I wonder if that’s your worry watchdog telling you that?”Model the strategies and talk aloud about what you are thinking and feeling eg “I’m feeling overwhelmed right now, so I’m going to do some belly breathing in my room now to help me feel calm”

Incorporate the language used into your everyday life as much as possible, and get the whole family on board.

Having a common language and shared strategies is a powerful way to build their coping skills.Don’t feel like they need to grasp and apply every concept that is taught.  Even if one thing sticks, it can be life-changing for them. 

Revisiting the videos as they mature can help them discover new concepts they didn’t grasp first time around.

Coping skills take time to take hold, make time to practice them until it becomes second nature for them.
